If you have ever searched "healthy meal plan" and printed something out, only to abandon it by Wednesday, you are not doing anything wrong. The plan was just built for nobody in particular.

ChatGPT can do something different. You can tell it about your actual family, your actual budget, and the fact that nobody in your house will eat mushrooms, and it will build around all of that. This post shows you exactly how.

First, how to get started

Go to chatgpt.com and make a free account. Once you are in, you will see a box at the bottom of the screen. Type your question or instructions there and press Enter. That is the whole thing. You cannot break anything, and if the answer it gives you is not what you wanted, you can just tell it that and ask again.

Why generic meal plans fall apart

When you ask for "healthy meals for the week," you get a plan designed for a fictional average person. It assumes you have an hour to cook on a Tuesday. It does not know you have a picky eight-year-old or that you already have half a bag of lentils in the cupboard. It does not know your grocery store, your budget, or that you hate doing dishes.

So you look at Day 3 and think, "I am not making that," and the whole thing goes in the recycling bin.

The more specific your instructions, the more useful the answer. A plan built around your real life is one you might actually follow.

What to include when you ask for a meal plan

Here is what makes the difference between a plan you use and one you ignore.

Your family size and who is eating. Four people eating dinner is different from two adults and two small children. Portion sizes change, and so does the grocery list.

Any dietary restrictions. Be specific. "We avoid pork" or "my daughter is lactose intolerant" gives it something to work with. One important note: ChatGPT cannot guarantee that any recipe is safe for a serious allergy. If someone in your family has a severe allergy, check every single ingredient yourself before cooking.

How much time you actually have. You can ask for meals where the active cooking time is under 30 minutes. That is a real thing you can specify, and it will stick to it.

Your weekly grocery budget. A family of four might set a budget of $150 for the week, covering breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and dinners. A single adult might work with around $60, focusing on whole foods. Put your real number in.

How many nights you will actually cook. If you know you order takeout on Fridays and eat at your sister's on Sundays, say so. Asking it to plan five cooking nights instead of seven means the plan fits your week, not an imaginary one.

What equipment you have. If you mention an Instant Pot or an air fryer, it can lean on those. More usefully, if you do not have certain equipment, say so, and it will stop suggesting recipes that need it.

What cuisines your family enjoys. If your household loves Mexican food and Asian dishes, say that. You will get a plan that feels familiar rather than one that feels like a homework assignment.

What is already in your pantry. If you have rice, canned tomatoes, and chicken thighs, tell it. It can build meals around what you already have, which cuts your grocery bill and reduces waste.

The copy-paste block

Here is a set of instructions you can copy and use. Change everything in [square brackets] to match your own situation.

Please create a 7-day meal plan for [family size, e.g. a family of four: two adults and two children aged 8 and 11].

Dietary needs: [list any restrictions, e.g. no shellfish, one person is lactose intolerant].

We will cook on [number of nights, e.g. five nights]. The other nights we have leftovers or eat out.

Active cooking time should be under [time, e.g. 30 minutes] per meal.

Weekly grocery budget: [your budget, e.g. $120], covering dinners and lunches.

We enjoy [cuisines or food types, e.g. Mexican and Italian food]. We do not like [dislikes, e.g. mushrooms or very spicy food].

Equipment we have: [e.g. a standard oven, stovetop, and slow cooker].

We already have in the pantry: [e.g. rice, pasta, olive oil, canned beans, chicken stock].

Please include a consolidated grocery list with estimated prices and notes on where a generic brand would work just as well as a name brand. You can also include approximate calories and protein per dinner if that is easy to add.

Here is what that looks like filled in with real details:

Please create a 7-day meal plan for a family of four: two adults and two children aged 9 and 13.

Dietary needs: no pork, and one adult is vegetarian so please make dinners that work for everyone or note easy swaps.

We will cook on five nights. The other nights we have leftovers or order pizza.

Active cooking time should be under 30 minutes per meal.

Weekly grocery budget: $150, covering dinners and packed lunches for the kids.

We enjoy Mexican and Asian food. We do not like mushrooms or very fishy-tasting fish.

Equipment we have: a standard oven, stovetop, and an air fryer.

We already have in the pantry: rice, canned black beans, soy sauce, olive oil, and a bag of frozen corn.

Please include a consolidated grocery list with estimated prices and notes on where a generic brand would work just as well as a name brand.

Copy the first block, fill it in with your details, paste it into the box at chatgpt.com, and press Enter.

What you will get back

ChatGPT will give you a day-by-day plan, a single grocery list that covers the whole week, and notes on where you can save money by choosing store brands. If you asked for nutritional information, it will include rough calorie and protein counts per meal. It pulls all your constraints together so you are not cross-referencing five different things.

If something in the plan does not work, just say so. "Can you swap Wednesday's dinner for something that uses the leftover chicken?" works perfectly well. You are having a conversation, not filling out a form.

A few things worth knowing

The plan it gives you is a starting point. Prices will vary by where you live and what is on sale that week. Treat the grocery estimates as a rough guide, not a guarantee.

And again: if anyone in your family has a serious food allergy, read every recipe ingredient yourself. Do not rely on ChatGPT to catch every hidden source of an allergen. It sometimes makes things up or misses details, and with allergies, that matters.

One more thing

If you want to check whether your instructions are as clear and specific as they could be before you use them, fixmyprompt.net/try will look them over for free, up to three times a day.
